We develop a novel coarse-grained contact model for Discrete Element Method simulations of \(\hbox {TiO}_2\) nanoparticle films subjected to mechanical stress. All model elements and parameters are derived in a self-consistent and physically sound way from all-atom Molecular Dynamics simulations of interacting particles and surfaces. In particular, the nature of atomic-scale friction and dissipation effects is taken into account by explicit modelling of the surface features and water adsorbate layers that strongly mediate the particle-particle interactions. The quantitative accuracy of the coarse-grained model is validated against all-atom simulations of \(\hbox {TiO}_2\) nanoparticle agglomerates under tensile stress. Moreover, its predictive power is demonstrated with calculations of force-displacement curves of entire nanoparticle films probed with force spectroscopy. The simulation results are compared with Atomic Force Microscopy and Transmission Electron Microscopy experiments.  相似文献

Two-Photon Lithography, thanks to its very high sub-diffraction resolution, has become the lithographic technique par excellence in applications requiring small feature sizes and complex 3D pattering. Despite this, the fabrication times required for extended structures remain much longer than those of other competing techniques (UV mask lithography, nanoimprinting, etc.). Its low throughput prevents its wide adoption in industrial applications. To increase it, over the years different solutions have been proposed, although their usage is difficult to generalize and may be limited depending on the specific application. A promising strategy to further increase the throughput of Two-Photon Lithography, opening a concrete window for its adoption in industry, lies in its combination with holography approaches: in this way it is possible to generate dozens of foci from a single laser beam, thus parallelizing the fabrication of periodic structures, or to engineer the intensity distribution on the writing plane in a complex way, obtaining 3D microstructures with a single exposure. Here, the fundamental concepts behind high-speed Two-Photon Lithography and its combination with holography are discussed, and the literary production of recent years that exploits such techniques is reviewed, and contextualized according to the topic covered.  相似文献

This paper describes the network architecture and provides a performance analysis of a passive optical network named SONATA, which has been proposed and demonstrated in the context of the European Union ACTS Program. In this nationwide all-optical network, end terminals access a single passive routing node via PONs using a TDMA/WDMA access scheme based on reservations. The centralized network controller runs resource allocation algorithms in order to avoid conflicts among end terminals. We formally define the resource allocation problem at the network controller, and show that, in general, it is NP-hard. We also provide simple heuristic algorithms to solve the problem. The analysis of the algorithms is performed both via analysis and simulation.  相似文献

The first step in a video indexing process is the segmentation of videos into meaningful parts called shots. In this paper we present a formal model of the video shot segmentation process. Starting from a mathematical characterization of the most common transition effects, a video segmentation algorithm capable to detect both abrupt and gradual transitions is proposed. The proposed algorithm is based on the computation of an arbitrary similarity measure between consecutive frames of a video. The algorithm has been tested adopting a similarity metric based on the Animate Vision theory and results have been reported.  相似文献

This paper presents and evaluates a quasi-optimal scheduling algorithm for input buffered cell-based switches, named reservation with preemption and acknowledgment (RPA). RPA is based on reservation rounds where the switch input ports indicate their most urgent data transfer needs, possibly overwriting less urgent requests by other input ports, and an acknowledgment round to allow input ports to determine what data they can actually transfer toward the desired switch output port. RPA must be executed during every cell time to determine which cells can be transferred during the following cell time. RPA is shown to be as simple as the simplest proposals of input queuing scheduling, efficient in the sense that no admissible traffic pattern was found under which RPA shows throughput limitations, and flexible, allowing the support of packet-mode operations and different traffic classes with either strict priority discipline or bandwidth guarantee requirements. The effectiveness of RPA is assessed with detailed simulations in uniform as well as unbalanced traffic conditions and its performance is compared with output queuing switches and the optimal maximum weighted matching (MWM) algorithm for input-buffered switches. Porous hydroxyapatite (HA) scaffoldings are currently used in tissue engineering for bone reconstruction. When this osteoconductive biomaterial is combined with osteoprogenitor cells, it acquires osteoinductive features which accelerate and improve bone formation in vivo. The aim of our study was to assess the mechanical properties of HA–bone complexes undergoing indentation tests, and relate stiffness to composition and structure as examined by micro X-ray. To this purpose, 35-mm tibia diaphyseal resections were performed in sheep. Gaps were filled using porous HA cylinders. Implants were loaded with autologous bone marrow stromal cells (BMSC); cell-free cylinders were used as control. After 8 weeks, bone tissue was found within the internal macropores of cell-loaded HA carriers, and in control implants, bone formation was mostly limited to the outer surface. As assessed by indentation testing the stiffness values of bone–HA composites were halfway between those of HA scaffoldings and tibia bone. Cell-loaded implants were stiffer than cell-free ones. In a cell-loaded implant we also analyzed the variation of stiffness along the main axis of the tibia.  相似文献

Solid surface/liquid interactions play an important role in microfluidics and particularly in manipulation of films, drops and bubbles, a basic requirement for a number of lab-on-chip applications. The behavior of solvents in coated microchannels is difficult to be predicted considering theories; therefore, experimental methods able to estimate the properties at the interface in real time and during the operational regime are amenable. Here, we propose to use an experimental setup to evaluate the effective dynamics of solvents inside PDMS microchannels. The influence of the solvent properties as well as of the channel wall’s wettability on the fluid movements was evaluated. Modification of the channel properties was achieved by introducing Teflon coatings that allow producing stable hydrophobic microchannel walls. The results were fitted according to Washburn-type power-law and compared with theoretical calculations of the parameter β that expresses the dependence of capillary dynamics on surface tension γ, liquid viscosity η, contact angles θ and the hydraulic radius R H. A comparison between the calculated and the experimental values reveled that parameters other than the contemplated ones influenced the measurements. The main parameter that affects the flow of solvents such as water, methanol ethanol, dimethylformamide, acetonitrile and acetone was found to be the γ/η ratio. Considering these results, the investigation tool described here is believed to be promising to predict the dynamics of common organic solvents inside integrated functional fluidic devices and to accurately control solvent flow, particularly in capillary-driven pumpless systems, a basic requirement for widening the application range of PDMS lab-on-chip devices.  相似文献

A space-variant optical interconnection through the use of computer-generated holograms is proposed, and specific configurations to increase the number of parallel channels are analyzed. To this end, the well-known method based on a matrix composed of subholograms is applied. The field diffracted by each channel (assumed to be square apertures) is calculated through the angular-spectrum technique, and the resulting fields are suitably superimposed to obtain a hologram matrix with a reduced bandwidth. Results show that a compact transmissive planar configuration can be handled; in particular, the small interconnect distance between the array planes and the hologram yields a limited system volume.  相似文献

A 0.5 wt% Pd/LaCoO3, prepared by flame-spray pyrolysis (FP), was tested as catalyst for the low-temperature selective reduction of NO by H2 in the presence of excess O2. In particular, the effect of the precalcination and prereduction temperature on catalytic activity was compared with that of a similar Pd/LaCoO3 sample prepared by impregnation with a Pd solution of FP-prepared LaCoO3. The FP-made catalyst allowed full NO conversion at 150 °C, with 78% selectivity to N2, thus outperforming the catalytic behavior of the corresponding sample prepared by impregnation. The higher activity of the FP-made catalyst has been attributed to the formation of segregated Co metal particles, not present in the impregnated sample, formed during the precalcination at 800 °C, followed by reduction at 300 °C. Two reaction mechanisms can be deduced from the temperature-programmed experiments. The first of these, occurring at lower temperatures, indicates cooperation between the Pd and Co metal particles, with formation of active nitrates on cobalt, successively reduced by hydrogen spillover from Pd. The second, occurring at higher temperature, allows 50% conversion of NO, with >90% selectivity to N2, and involves N adatoms formed by dissociative NO adsorption over Pd. Prereduction at 600 °C led to a slight increase in catalytic activity, due to the formation of a PdCo alloy, which is more stable on reoxidization compared with Pd alone. Moreover, the cooperative reaction mechanism seems to be favored by the proximity of Co and Pd in metal particles.  相似文献

Internet measured data collected via passive measurement are analyzed to obtain localization information on nodes by clustering (i.e., grouping together) nodes that exhibit similar network path properties. Since traditional clustering algorithms fail to correctly identify clusters of homogeneous nodes, we propose the NetCluster novel framework, suited to analyze Internet measurement datasets. We show that the proposed framework correctly analyzes synthetically generated traces. Finally, we apply it to real traces collected at the access link of Politecnico di Torino campus LAN and discuss the network characteristics as seen at the vantage point.  相似文献
